First Year Exploration

Tips for pre-concentrators:

First-year students interested in any of the ENCE tracks are strongly encouraged to take ENCE 10: Gateway to Energy, Climate, and Environment in their first semester as a gateway to the overall curriculum.

Students interested in the Science & Engineering for Sustainable Soultions Track are encouraged to begin math in their first term (according to your Harvard math placement) and take ENCE 50: Gateway to Science and Engineering for Sustainable Solutions in the spring of your first year.

Sample Schedules for SESS Track:

You can review the full details of the SESS Track requirements, as well as a sample schedule for the first two years below. Please reach out to the ENCE SESS DUS if you have questions about your own course sequence.

For ENCE - SESS students starting in Math 1a:

 Fall TermSpring Term
First Year

ENCE 10

Math 1a

ENCE 50

Math 1b

Consider: Physics (PS 12a, Phys 15a) or Chemistry (PS 11)

Second Year

Math 21a

Physics (12b, 15) / Chemistry (Chem 10)

Computation/Data Science Course (e.g., AM 10)

Math 21b

Physics / Chemistry

** Advising note: ENCE 50 and Physics A (12a, 15a) each have a co-requisite of Math 1b.

For ENCE - SESS students starting in Math 1b:

 Fall TermSpring Term
First Year

ENCE 10

Math 1b

ENCE 50

Math 21a

Consider: Physics (PS 12a, Phys 15a) or Chemistry (PS 11)

Second Year

Math 21b

Physics (12b, 15) / Chemistry 10

Computation/Data Science Course (e.g., AM 10)

Physics/Chemistry

SESS Braid Course

** Advising note: If you are interested in proof based Math (such as Math 22a,b), that should be taken on-sequence in second year. Good alternative is to take both a chemistry and physics in first-year spring; or a science course and computer science course (like CS 32) in first-year spring.

For ENCE - SESS students starting in Math 21a (or equivalent):

 Fall TermSpring Term
First Year

ENCE 10

Math 21a

ENCE 50

Math 21b

Consider: Physics (PS 12a, Phys 15a) or Chemistry (PS 11)

Second Year

Physics (12, 15) /Chemistry (10)

Computation/Data Science Course (e.g., AM 10)

Consider: SESS Braid Course

Physics/Chemistry

SESS Braid Course
