Meet David Sengeh '10 and his mentor bioengineer David Edwards

Thanks to a innovative class, Sengeh was able to translate an idea into a solution to light Africa

Meet David Sengeh, Harvard College Class of 2010, and one of his mentors, David Edwards, Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Biomedical Engineering.

This summer, Sengeh is collaborating with a team of fellow Harvard students determined to “light” sub-Saharan Africa using microbial fuel — or ‘dirt-powered’— cell-based lighting systems.

The team was awarded a $200,000 grant from the World Bank to realize the project.
