R. Martin Chavez, S.M. ’85 (computer science) was a featured speaker at the Harvard University Institute for Applied Computational Science (IACS) 2017 Symposium on the Future of Computation in Science and Engineering, titled “Data, Dollars, and Algorithms: The Computational Economy.” The annual event brought together hundreds of engineers, scientists, and academics for a day of seminars on the role data and computing resources are playing in changing the nature of the economy.
Chavez, deputy chief financial officer and chief information officer at Goldman Sachs, discussed how data and computing are transforming the financial industry. He drew similarities between Google and Goldman Sachs, and explained that one third of the firm’s employees are now engineers. In 2000, Goldman Sachs employed 600 stock traders; today, the firm employs only two, showing how computing is turning the traditional business model on its head. “Everything we do is underpinned by math and software,” he said.
