Robert Weller, A.B. '72, was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering’s Class of 2025. Weller, who studied applied physics and engineering sciences at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), was recognized for his contributions to the theory, observation, and instrumentation of the upper ocean and air-sea interface. Weller has been a senior scientist in the Physical Oceanography department of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod since 1992, and became chair of the department in 2006.
Following his degree at SEAS, Weller earned a Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California-San Diego in 1978. He stayed for one additional postdoctoral year before joining Woods Hole as a postdoctoral scholar in 1979.
Several other SEAS alumni have also been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). James Duane Livingston, Ph.D. '56, was part of the Class of 1994, followed by Sheldon Weinbaum, Ph.D. '63, (Class of 1996), Gonzalo Castro, Ph.D. '69, (2003), and Peter Basser, A.B. '80, Ph.D. '86 and John Fan, Ph.D. '72 (both 2020).
