The Gates Foundation-sponsored research of bioengineer David Edwards was featured as part of a cover story, "Injecting New Ideas Into Vaccines" (Chronicle of Higher Education)

"[Edwards] ... put to use his knowledge of nanomaterials to make a liquid vaccine into an aerosol spray of dry particles. He designed what he calls 'whiffle balls' — tiny, cagelike particles that contain and protect vaccines as they are dried into a powder."
