How do I get access to the REEF Makerspace?
Users must complete the required online safety training and attend an in-person orientation before using the space. Additional information can be found under the ACCESS tab of the website.
Can I use the Makerspace immediately after orientation?
Yes, after completing the required onboarding process, users can access the general Makerspace. Certain equipment areas require additional training.
How long does orientation take?
The basic orientation takes approximately 20 minutes and is designed to introduce users to the space, safety policies, and expectations. Equipment-specific instruction is provided separately.
Can I schedule an alternative orientation session?
In many cases, alternative arrangements may be possible if scheduled orientation sessions conflict with academic commitments.
Is access available to students outside of SEAS?
Most Harvard affiliates can access REEF after completing the required training and orientation. This includes Staff and Faculty.
Do I need separate training for the laser cutter?
Yes. Laser cutter access requires equipment-specific training beyond the general orientation.
Where do I register for equipment training?
Training sessions are listed on the REEF website under the TRAININGS section.
What equipment requires additional certification?
Typically:
- Laser cutters

I've used similar equipment before. Can training be waived?
No. REEF requires its own training to ensure users understand local safety procedures and workflows.
Can I learn a machine during my first visit?
If listed under DIY Training in the website’s TRAININGS section, it is likely you will be able to use it immediately. The 3D scanner and heat press typically require scheduling.
What equipment is available in REEF?
Resources include:
- 3D printers (FDM). Resin 3D printers are not available at this time.
- Laser cutters
- Woodworking equipment
- Electronics and soldering stations
- CNC equipment
- Dye sublimation equipment
- General fabrication tools

Does REEF provide materials?
Some consumables are available, but project-specific materials are often the responsibility of the user.
Does REEF provide filament for 3D printers?
PLA printing materials are often available for use within the posted policy limits, though project scope and volume may affect availability.
Can I store my project in the Makerspace?
Limited storage options are available for active projects, subject to space availability and project duration.
Are hand tools available without shop certifications?
Hand tools generally have fewer restrictions than powered equipment, although users must still complete the in-person orientation and online safety training.
Can staff build or repair something for me?
No. Staff provide guidance, instruction, and consultation, but users are responsible for completing their own projects.
Can staff help troubleshoot my design or fabrication process?
Yes. Staff can provide advice, recommendations, and help users identify solutions.
Can I use REEF for class projects?
Absolutely. Many students use REEF to support coursework, capstone projects, independent studies, and extracurricular projects.
Can I use REEF for personal projects?
Yes, provided projects comply with REEF policies and safety requirements.
Can I bring guests into REEF to help me with a project?
No. Only approved users who have gone through the training and are current Harvard affiliates are able to work in the REEF.
Can I bring my children into REEF?
The REEF Makerspace is a lab environment. In accordance with University policy, minors are not allowed in lab environments.
Are there accessibility accommodations available?
Yes. REEF works with university resources to provide reasonable accommodations and accessible training options.
When is the Makerspace open?
Hours vary throughout the year and may depend on staff availability and training schedules. Please refer to the main page to see the most up-to-date information.
Do I need to reserve equipment?
Certain equipment or services may require reservations depending on demand. 3D printers are first-come, first-serve.
Can student workers assist me during open hours?
Yes. Student staff are typically available during the Fall and Spring Semester evenings to answer questions and help users navigate equipment and procedures.
How quickly can I get trained?
Training schedules vary by semester and demand. Early registration is recommended. To assist with training demand, please only sign up for training when you are looking to accomplish a specific project. This will help with knowledge retention and reduce retraining down the road.
