Researching the many ways that human society is impacting the Earth system requires expertise from a wide variety of traditional disciplines and fields, including atmospheric chemistry, meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, oceanography, biogeochemistry, geophysics, hydrology and ecology. The faculty members in SEAS represent many of these disciplines, often collaborating with faculty from other departments at Harvard when appropriate. The research areas below are intended to help potential students identify faculty members with shared research interests.

Prospective Ph.D. students looking for a primary research advisor may consider any of our faculty members in ESE.  We note that those faculty members listed on this page as “Affiliates” have primary appointments in other departments at Harvard.  These affiliated faculty members can serve on advisory committees, and can co-advise a Ph.D. student with another ESE faculty member, but cannot serve as the primary research advisor.
